To start, I , being of Hispanic descent have had to deal with watching shitty, over-the-top, and usually unintentionally hilarious Telenovelas my entire life. This is due to the fact that my grandmothers and parents love watching them. As a kid, I hated them and would do my best to avoid them since I couldn't stand the sappy love stories they all had. What's been happening lately, however, is that these large Spanish-language networks(Univision, Telemundo, etc) are actually starting to make slightly more serious and violent Telenovelas about infamous drug lords. I got on the bandwagon a few years ago when my buddy Gaspar got me to start watching Pablo Escobar: El Patron del Mal(Lord of Evil, in English). That show was actually really well done and got me hooked on these narco-Telenovelas. My buddy David, also got hooked and watched the show with us. The interesting thing about David is that unlike myself and Gaspar, he's not Hispanic and doesn't know how to speak Spanish. He's just your typical, all-American boy(...who also happens to be half Burmese).
Anyways, fast forward to last year when the Pablo Escobar show ended and got replaced by another Telenovela about an infamous drug lord called El Senor de Los Cielos(Lord of the Skies). It's loosely based on the story behind the real El Senor de Los Cielos, Amado Carillo; however on this show, they renamed him Aurelio Casillas. This show, to put it mildly, is f***ing bonkers. Some of the acting on the show makes the performances in the Room look like Casablanca. Also, the story line is soooooo convoluted it'll make your head spin. However, because it's so bat-shit crazy, David and I wanted to share this madness with-you-the American audience that should know about this diamond in the rough. If you don't believe how insane it is, just watch the opening to the show:
Be sure to keep up to date with this blog since episode # 0, where David and myself introduce the basic structure and ourselves to the world will be coming very, very soon.
